King Charles III Coronation Medal

Professor Stéphane Beaulac is a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. At a ceremony held in Ottawa on December 17 2024, this commemorative distinction was awarded to him by the Senate of Canada, presented by Senator Claude Carignan. It aims to recognize Canadians who have distinguished themselves through dedication and commitment that have a significant impact on their community, at the local, regional, or national level.
For some 25 years, Professor Beaulac has made his mark in academia and in the practice of law, primarily in public international law and Canadian constitutional law. A former law clerk at the Supreme Court and a Ph.D. graduate of the University of Cambridge, he received in 2018 the Order of Merit from his alma mater, the University of Ottawa. He regularly serves as a visiting professor in Europe, multiple times through fellowships: Florence, Edinburgh, Cork, Graz, Toulouse, Amsterdam, Ulster, Trento, Padua, Rome, Berlin. A prolific author, he has published 25 law books and more than 120 articles and other scholarly writings in academic journals and with renowned publishers, including Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. His research is regularly funded by public organizations, both in Canada and abroad; he ranks among the top 10% of authors on the SSRN network. His writings have earned awards and have been cited numerous times by the Supreme Court and occasionally by the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
Dedicated to public service, Stéphane Beaulac shares his expertise when called upon, for example before parliamentary committees in Ottawa or at the National Assembly of Quebec. He has acted as an intervener in court cases before the Supreme Court (Ward decision of 2021; Bissonnette decision of 2022; Alford decision of 2026; challenge to Bill 21 of 2026), and more recently as amicus curiae before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, in the context of an advisory opinion. Combining academia and private practice for about six years, Me Beaulac is a lawyer and member of the Law Society of Ontario and legal counsel to the Barreau du Québec.
